The latest analysis of the AMA's multiple applications confirms the trend that was already apparent in the spring. In particular, sugar beet cultivation continues to decline significantly in Austria. At the same time, many farms are increasingly focusing on grain maize and sunflowers , while the trends for the most important cereal crops largely remain unchanged from the initial survey.

Sugar beets continue to lose importance

The decline is particularly pronounced in sugar beet cultivation . As of July 16, 2026, only 20,900 hectares are under cultivation across Austria. The previous year, this figure was 25,019 hectares, and two years prior, it was as high as 43,432 hectares. The primary cause is the anticipated reduction in acreage due to pests, which continues to put considerable pressure on cultivation.

Corn continues to grow

In contrast, the area under grain maize cultivation continues to grow. This year it reaches 206,638 hectares, which is 4,271 hectares more than last year. Between 2024 and 2025, the cultivated area had already expanded by more than 13,000 hectares. This continues the trend of recent years.

Sunflowers benefit from rising demand

Oilseeds also show a clear upward trend. The sunflower acreage has increased by a further 5,545 hectares compared to the previous year, thus even exceeding the increase already recorded in the first acreage assessment in April.

Grain development confirms spring trend

There have been hardly any changes in cereal crops compared to the initial report. Soft wheat continues to decline, while winter barley continues to gain ground. Organic rye cultivation is also being carried out on a larger area than last year. These latest figures thus confirm the trends already observed in Austrian arable farming in the spring.
