Just before the peak doughnut season of 2027, the Food Academy 's big doughnut check will take place from January 11th to 13th. Registration starts on August 10th; until August 12th, there is a 10% discount on the participation fee.
Whether it's a small family business, a traditional bakery or a dedicated vocational school: the doughnut check is a good opportunity to have the quality of the doughnuts recognized by a jury of experts and to show customers that true master quality is in the display case.
All commercial businesses that produced the doughnuts submitted for judging in their own facilities, as well as vocational schools, are eligible to participate. The competition will take place in Vienna, Linz, and Innsbruck.

Four categories in the doughnut check

Donuts can be submitted in four different categories as part of the donut check:

1. The classic: Traditional apricot doughnut.
2. Chocolate Love: Everything from nougat to dark chocolate cream.
3. Cream Dream: Vanilla, eggnog, pudding and fine creams.
4. “Homeland in a Doughnut”: The doughnut must contain at least one typical regional ingredient from the respective federal state/region in the dough or filling, such as Styrian pumpkin seeds or Pielachtal dirndl. Savory doughnuts are also permitted.

Gold, silver and bronze as a marketing advantage

In addition to determining the quality of the doughnuts, the doughnut check offers further advantages to the award-winning businesses.
Not only the first-place winner receives an award; all products that meet the respective quality standards receive digital seals and stickers in gold, silver, or bronze, which can be used directly in stores and for marketing purposes. In addition, the Food Academy provides a digital marketing kit containing social media templates ("We've won gold!") and printable posters.

Up to 100 points: This is how the expert jury evaluates

The new competition format of the Food Academy was developed with a team of experts from the baking industry. The evaluation criteria include aroma and overall taste, appearance, surface, texture/rise, and fullness. A points system is used for judging, with a maximum of 100 points achievable for each entry. A minimum of 98 points is required for a gold award. The expert jury consists of master bakers, master confectioners, bread sommeliers, and vocational school teachers.
